As long as I can remember, I couldn’t wait to be in the working world and be just like Jenna from 13 going on 30. I couldn’t wait to be able to wear a chic blazer, pants, and heels every day. Unfortunately, I am not a CEO or an editor of a high-end magazine but instead a teacher. Where wearing heels is really not a practical move for working with kids. My feet are definitely happy about it however, I sometimes wish it was practical.
As a teacher, we are not sitting in an office overlooking the city but rather in a room full of students ready to learn. When starting out, I tried to merge the working woman outfit with the practicality of teaching.
I don’t know about you but when I think of a teacher, I think of Ms. Frizzle with her themed outfits that match whatever adventure they are going on. I loved Ms. Frizzle but was not about wearing those themed outfits. What I did want was the businesswomen feel with the pencil skirt, tailored blazer, and heels.
When I started teaching, I decided that I want to change how I thought of teachers and the “professional” dress that comes with it. Hopefully, this gives other teachers or women trying to dress professionally some ideas on dressing professional but still be comfortable and practical for your everyday job!
To get the professional feel, I mix versatility of needing to be moving and squatting helping kids but still looking like the women who runs things downtown. One way to professionalize- is that a word?? is to have one staple piece. Such as a blazer, that can be dressed up or down. Like this one, here.
This blazer is a staple piece in my wardrobe so, I ‘ve paired it with a band tee, and red flats. You can also pair it with black booties, like I have to give the outfit an edgier vibe or when you are hitting happy hour with your girls. The blazer would also go great with a chiffon shirt, and tailored pants, giving it an even more professional feel.
Blazers are the perfect way to add some professionalism to any outfit. I absolutely love this blazer; the stripes add some character and can be easily be dressed up or be more casual. I find myself adding blazers to many of my daily work outfits because I get to feel like a boss lady and who doesn’t want that?
Another great thing is that it didn’t break the bank. As a teacher, money is not one of the benefits of the job so finding staple pieces that won’t set you back are a must. I found this blazer at Forever 21. Now, I usually like to find staple pieces that are of higher quality, but don’t sleep on Forever 21 you can find some great pieces at an even better cost when you do some digging!
When styling my outfits in the morning for work, I try to take one piece that would be professional and add it to an outfit that I can be working with students in, like jeans. This outfit allows me to still feel professional while being able to work with kids for 6 hours.
What are ways that you add some professionalism to your outfits for work? Do you have staple pieces? I would love to hear from you to add to my repertoire!!
